It is a hot topic in Tolosaldea and in the student movement, what happened at Orixe de Tolosa College in the last two weeks. At a press conference held on 14 January, members of Orixe college denounced that the student self-defense networks of Bachillerato were created in Tolosaldea, Aiaraldea and Sakana and denounced that the evaluation criteria of the center and the educational system in general are "unfair". They affirmed that this is a system oriented to competitiveness, in which they are also taught subjects they do not like and that the notes assigned to them on a scale from zero to ten, condition the studies they want and condition the work in the future. On the other hand, they pointed out that at Orixe College some subjects are “urgently” worked.

Liher, a student of the Faculty of Humanities and Educational Sciences, tells us that the press conference was recorded and broadcast in video to reach as many students as possible. In it, they explained whether they want to change the current evaluation criteria. The video was recorded on behalf of the Tolosaldea Self-Defense Network (TAS), via the YouTube platform. He has recently been censored at the request of a parent, since his minor son appears there.

Two days after the video was made public, a professor projected the video in class, demining what they denounced and rejecting the attitude of those present at the press conference. “He said he was going to denounce those students,” says Liher. The management met with all the teachers to discuss the issue. According to Liher, although initially the teachers were "in favor" of the students, after that meeting they were "against". As a result, the professor who threatened them to put the address and the complaint met with the students who made the press conference. The management said it would later be agreed with the parents.

“This or nothing”

After the meeting between parents, management and students, the management informed that, based on the regulations of the center, the management would apply the sanctions. To make the press conference they had to spend a day in the library, to summarize the rules of the center in a schematic way and make the mural in the library. In addition, they had to sign a normative report, in which they were apologizing and would not repeat themselves again. They had to do it for last Thursday. They began collecting signatures to denounce the attitude of the center and, after the accession of 130 people, went to the management to negotiate: they refused.

At the press conference, 22 students from the ikastola were affected. 17 of them accepted and served the sentence, while five others did not sign the report. These have been dismissed for three days from Friday, 25 January. Liher has stated that they did not know that they were going to be fired by the National Liberation Army.

Note by the address

Orixe de Tolosa College has published a press release explaining what happened. It's been addressed to the entire educational community. The management says that students have their own forums and channels to make these kinds of demands and requests, and that details about the evaluation criteria of the center are not correct. Ask parents to speak “with serenity and common sense” with their sons and daughters about communication attitudes, procedures and obligations.
