Social movements for gender equality in society have increased in recent years. In view of this situation, it is essential for Early Childhood Education to develop an education on gender equality in the education of children. In fact, in childhood, boys and girls are unprejudiced and more easily acquire values based on equality. Therefore, the implementation of an egalitarian education with a gender perspective has a more effective impact on the process of development and education of children.
Although there have been significant advances on the road to gender equality in the educational field, sexist behaviors are reproduced in society. It is therefore a question of eliminating gender trends and stereotypes generated by the patriarchal culture of any society in the world in classrooms and beyond. In fact, in patriarchal culture, women have remained in the background, and men and women play concrete roles, which determine what is expected, what they can and cannot do in different activities.
"The pedagogical proposal to be implemented in schools must respond to the demand for equality formulated by feminist theory"
The pedagogical proposal to be applied today in schools must be developed in order to respond to the demand for equality raised by feminist theory. Gender equality and the gender perspective aim to eliminate the scarce historical representation of women in many areas of society and gender roles and to promote equal opportunities between women and men. To do so, it would be best if the educational curriculum considered the gender perspective in a cross-sectional way in each activity. Warn that the boy and girl have the same functions, duties and rights. Therefore, the strategies to be developed in the classroom should be based on the following premises: not discriminating between the games, functions or colors of the children, and that the roles they play in the group tasks or in the games are the same, for which there must be an important change of role. It should be added that the school material should be adapted to the objectives of equality and internalize the use of non-sexist language.
On the other hand, it is necessary to develop gender equality beyond the classroom. It must be an objective to achieve real gender equality, to eliminate machismo and sexism and to avoid violence towards women. For this, the participation of parents and institutions is essential. For example, equality in extracurricular activities or in children's sports practices should be promoted. Not only through mixed sport, but also by bringing value to those who practise women. It should also be noted that gender equality must take into account other areas. For example, domestic work or the wage gap. In this way, boys and girls will realize that because we are men or women we have to have the same obligations and rights in society and that they should not be imposed certain social and gender roles.
Finally, the education of boys and girls on gender equality is essential to achieve real equality between men and women and to eradicate certain stereotypes. Starting with the most basic educational levels is essential to establish the principles of equality. But this function should not be exclusive to teachers, but to the educational community, parents and society in general. The principles of gender equality should be taught since childhood, as there is still no patriarchal vision of the current society in the children's mental scheme, and it is easier for them to internalize ideas of gender equality, among other things to end stereotypes or gender roles.
