Heartstopper is a tender and loving story with a happy ending – although it reflects very well the homophobic and transphobic persecution or the difficulties of coming out of the closet – and that is precisely what he has thanked many people over the age, “because we have been denied homosexual tenderness,” says a tweet. The first kisses and looks, the excitement of the contact, the hand… They are images full of naivety, seen in multiple romantic plots, but not with the absolution of two protagonists children. Some have even commented that seeing the series has been cathartic, because compared to that innocent story, the reality has been heard on social media: there are many people who have closed their doors to the possibility of living a story like that of adolescence, until age, time, maturity, patience… they have given them enough strength to come out of the closet.
With referents like Heartstopper, the new generations have the opportunity to live their identity and relationships differently, because youth have more examples to internalize that it is possible to bring to light what they themselves had to suppress. But even if there are more references, it would be good to ask young people if it is easy and comfortable to come out of the closet in today’s school environment and in today’s society, to tell the person of the same sex you like who you like, without fear of coming back.
