According to the latest news, France intended to release two bears in the Western Pyrenees. The Government of Navarre has expressed its concern at the consequences it could have for Basque pastors and farmers. It has also denounced the "lack of information" that has been given to detainees.
The director of Water and Biodiversity of France, Thierry Vatin, announced last week the initiative for the release of the bear and said it was a firm decision. He has kept his word. However, in the absence of two bears, they have brought one by helicopter.
The helicopter was seen by the area’s neighbours between Santa Grazi and Larraine. In these two villages there have been mobilizations against the contribution of the bear during the summer. The Bear runs through the ports of Zuberoa and Bearn.
The livestock sector and many local voters are against this measure. Deputy Jean Lassalle, in his usual vocation, has assured that “I will oppose the placement of the bear, even if I have to go to jail”.
The bear has been moved from Slovenia and, as confirmed by the Minister for Ecological Transition, François de Rugby, the second one will soon arrive.
