The City Hall of Hernani has organized the third edition of the Hariak Resistance Film and Stories Festival, which will be held from 7 to 17 November in the Feminist Intercultural Square. The Cooperation Council, Itsaso Lekuona, the Cooperation Technique, Irantzu Jau­regi and the Hariak coordinator, Su Hernandez, presented the festival yesterday. The Feminist Intercultural Square will be converted for eight days into a movie theater, with free entrance. There will also be documentaries, talks, music, and this year, an Afro-Saxon.

The Department of Cooperation of the City of Hernani promotes the Hariak Festival, aimed at the protagonists of the Basque and world scene who organize, face and resist violations of environmental rights.

In this edition, Hariak has focused on the topic of Memori. In connection with this theme, attendees will have the opportunity to know stories from many corners and from different geographical areas.

Projection of documentaries and leading tertulias

Euskal Herria, Palestine, Sri Lanka, India, Chile, Senegal, Spain, Nigeria, Brazil... The Festival will offer the opportunity to know the realities here and there.

Councilwoman Itsaso Lekuona explained that this year the documentary screenings will be completed with the following talks, “to better understand the resistance and locate it”. There will be first level rapporteurs: Bertha Gaztelumendi, Olga Rodríguez, Ebabba Hameida, Gontzal Martínez de la Hidalga, Teresa Toda, Quinddy Akeju and Mahmoud Traoré, among others, will act at the Durango Fair.

The performances will be in the original version subtitled in Basque or Spanish. All sessions will be free of charge.

Opening in Brazilian tone

Another of Hariak’s charms is that the Feminist Intercultural Square becomes an outdoor movie theater. Irantzu Jauregi said that “taking advantage of this space works very well to turn it into a movie theater.”

The opening ceremony will take place on 7 November. The Brazilian Landless Movement will be given a voice and the ecofeminist and researcher Amanda Verrote will explain the keys to understanding the movement. Then Lua Matheus and Rodrigo Mota will come to Brazil to enjoy the music.

The Hariak Festival launches website

To facilitate the continuation of the festival to the followers of Hariak, this year the website hariak.hernani.eus will be released. Interested parties will find all the information on this year’s edition as well as previous editions.

The coordinator of the festival, Su Hernández, explained that they have worked the web with the intention of making it "usable, attractive and practical". “Having its own website will stabilize Haria to reach the level of other festivals.” For its part, Itsaso Lekuona has encouraged people to approach the festival: ‘He who comes for the first time repeats’.
