During ten days work stops will be held by staff of the Christian School of the Basque Country and the IZEA centers. Trade unions ELA, LAB, Steilas, CCOO and UGT have called for a strike to call for the renewal of the labour agreement that has expired since December 2021. They also call for the alleviation of the workload, the improvement of the feminized and precarious sectors, the increase in CPI pay and the maintenance of jobs.

9,000 workers have been called on to strike, affecting 130,000 pupils and 215 schools. Trade unions note that 65 per cent of the workforce joined the strike on the first day. In the case of Christian Schools, 15.11% of the staff. It is convened until February for 18, 23, 24 and 25 January and 6, 7, 8, 19 and 20 February.

Trade unions and employers met on Tuesday. If no agreement is reached, trade unions report that they will continue to strike: “We call on the Basque Government and the employers to do their homework, and to make proposals to eradicate the conflict.” They stress that proposals to employers are not “sufficient” because they do not guarantee the purchasing power of workers, the relief of workloads and the introduction of improvements for feminized sectors.

The Christian School has pointed out that the unions will continue the strike, despite some progress: “Unions are again invited to bet on negotiations and not on mobilizations, because this affects the right to education of students in a very negative way and adds even more difficulty to the difficult family reconciliation.”
