Fifteen people evicted in Vitoria-Gasteiz
  • The 15 vacant housing on Los Herrán Street was occupied in July 2020 by 30 people. Currently, 15 people lived and the police have evicted them from their homes on Tuesday morning. Inside the building, more than 20 people, neighbors or people who have come to offer protection have been identified. During the incidents, three youths have been detained outside the Ertzaintza, while two of the dislodged migrants have been transferred to the Aliens Office by municipal officials. Once the eviction is over, protesters have left the Emergency Social Services, where they have held a concentration to claim an alternative to families.

At 11 a.m., the Local Police has started opening the 15th door of Los Herrán Street, with the help of a locksmith, and they have needed about an hour. At 12:00 a.m. they entered the portal bringing one by one the members who were on the portal and after identifying them they were released. More than 20 people have been taken to the streets and denounced the aggressiveness of the Municipal Police in this work. Once the portal has been evicted, the agents have targeted five homes in which five families reside.

These included migrants, two of whom have been transferred to the Aliens Office, to the National Police Station. This has caused great indignation among those who participated in the protest, which has resulted in moments of tension between the demonstrators.

Once the dismissal has been completed, they have appealed to the citizens to go to the Emergency Social Services to ask for an alternative for the families left on the street.

Moments of tension on the street

Dozens of police officers have been involved in eviction. The Municipal Police has cut the street since the morning and dozens of people have sat in front of the portal building a wall, while the Ertzaines have pulled people one by one. Since then, throughout the morning there have been moments of tension between the Municipal Police and the Ertzaintza and the people who have gathered abroad. At one of these times, when the eviction was almost complete, there have been repeated incidents and the police have arrested three young people in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The Ertzaintza has put their wives in the car and moved the police to the house.

Five "no alternative" families

Five families lived in the occupied dwellings of Los Herrán Street, fifteen people, in vulnerable situations, including children. The Vitoria-Gasteiz Housing Union explained that, upon receiving the eviction order, they contacted the social services, the owners' lawyers and "some parties" of the City Hall to seek a solution for the families. At the moment, they have not achieved anything like that. "Without offering any alternative, these people have been left in the street," the same sources have warned.
