After suffering a chest pain for a while, he gave the first warning of his illness in May 2020, when he was in Topas prison. After a hospital review, he was returned to prison. During his stay in Burgos prison, Vicario Setién was taken to the emergency room in January 2021 and in February due to pain and dizziness. Last March he had a cardiology consultation, as he was confirmed to be on the waiting list for an exercise test on June 17.

Vicario underwent this test on 26 October in the Department of Nuclear Medicine of the Hospital of Burgos, where he was found to have severe large-scale ischemia. Due to his serious situation, on November 3 he was placed in a catheterization and stent.

It should also be added that the long-term prisoner has an almost lost vision of the right eye due to an occlusion of the central vein of that eye and that his condition is irreversible.

The prisoner of eta has been sentenced to six months in prison for the murder of Hodei Egiluz in Donostia. The General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions of Spain ordered last July, contrary to the decision of the Treatment Commission to transfer him to a prison in the Basque Country in Burgos. Now, in the face of his grave state of health, the prisoner of Durango has called for a treatment commission to be brought forward to analyze his prison situation.

At the age of 64, Gregorio Vicario was arrested in 2001 in the French State and provisionally handed over for trial, which was definitively handed over in 2016. It is included in the list of more than 50 Basque prisoners to whom the Spanish State does not count its sentence in France, and is therefore held for some 22 years in prison. The Basque prisoners are serving a double sentence for the same crime and it is time to end it.

Undoubtedly, like many other Basque prisoners, being in a very bad situation in prison, in addition to their age, means gradually deteriorating the health of the Durango prisoner. From ETXERAT we want to transfer a hug and all our support to Gregorio Vicario and his entire family at this sensitive time, and we also call on the prison administration to adopt immediate humanitarian solutions for the ex-incarceration or alienable imprisonment of Gregorio Vicario, as well as 19 other Basque prisoners with serious illnesses who apply the same measure.
