Strikes are never unnecessary
  • The message of several political leaders in the face of strikes in education and training has been that they are not "justified" at the moment. But the strike highlights them. It is useful, and it has an important reason: to maintain the dignity of the worker.

Leaders of the PNV and the Basque Government have listened to these statements in which they have asked workers to give up the strikes and mobilisations that are called for in education and health due to lack of personnel and security. The stoppages also concern several companies that have already announced employment regulation dossiers and annulled contracts.

“It’s not the time to strike,” says PNV President Andoni Ortuzar; “it’s a stoppage that is useless”, CAV Education Advisor Jokin Bildarratz; “the [teaching] strike is not justified”, lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu… These statements are nothing but manipulation and lies.

Of course, strikes and mobilizations work. And they are always effective, although social, economic, labour and political demands do not reach them immediately. Some examples. The eight-hour day was achieved thanks to the mobilization of the workers, although the Capital forces killed several workers. Also in the mining area of Bizkaia, after a hard strike, it was possible to live in dignified dwellings and not depend on the canteens. The workers in the Echevarria Bands had to face a 167 day unemployment to meet their demands. Workers in household appliances, steel, shipbuilding and equipment made pre-retirement at 52 years of age through mobilizations. The workers in the residences of Bizkaia fought for more than a year for more dignified working conditions on the street.

In fact, strikes and mobilisations have another important reason: Maintain the dignity of workers who do not submit to capital or their political managers. Of course, they also serve to make politicians of every moment appear in the back, with their threatening lies.
