Gloucester’s hunger strike ends: authorities must show the incinerator contract
  • On Wednesday, 13, at dusk, Sid Saunders, who began the action at the headquarters of the regional government of Gloucester and carried it out at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, began to eat again. It has managed to meet one of its requirements: By order of the Commissioner for Information, the authorities of Gloucestershire have 35 days to show in full the contract of 500 million pounds that they have signed with Urbaser for the construction and management of the Javeli Park incinerator.

He ate his last meal on May 29 and on the evening of June 13, just on his 39th birthday, Sid Saunders interrupts his fasting with the Gloucestershire incinerator conflict back on the media agenda. Years of struggle and controversy have put the authorities in a position to suspend their action by stopping the incinerator called Javelin Park, which has begun to be built in 2016, and showing the contract on which it is based.

Saunders achieved the second goal. The Commissioner for Information, who carries out certain functions of our Ombudsman relating to the transparency of information, which the English call ICO, has justified the striker and ordered the regional administration of Gloucestershire to publicly display, in less than 35 days, all the parts of the contract it has signed with the multinational Urbaser around the incinerator. The news has also been aired these days by the BBC in addition to the Gloucester press.

If he made the majority of the strike days among his family, friends and militants mobilized against the incinerator, he wanted to bring the protest to London at the end. Saunders takes the action to the Cathedral of Saint Paul, the headquarters of the Anglican Church in England.

In Saint Paul Cathedral, Saunders receives the blessing of the church and also... the priests have prevented the police from arresting the activist, claiming that his protest is respectable and allowing him to be present with his flag. One of the priests in charge of the cathedral is presented by the striker with one of the wooden spoons that he made by hand during the protest. "This bucket is a symbolic response to our behavior of disposing of resources, a way to denounce the use of landfills and incineration as single-use plastics. On the other hand, the ladle is very beautiful, natural, durable and shows us how we should do things, adding value and preserving to the things we use."
