Olympic champion Tom Daley targets LGBT youth who feel marginalized by society
  • The athlete Tom Daley, who just won gold at the Olympic Games, wanted to send a message of hope to the young people who see the dark future because they are not heterosexual: “You’re not alone.” So don't think they're out of place in this society, because in the world of sport, they're also LGBT referents, for children and young people who feel identified.

Yeah, it matters who you lie with

The British Tom Daley has taken advantage of the speaker who has given him the gold medal in a 10-meter synchronized trampoline. His statements have been echoed and messages on social networks have been plentiful, “the important thing is that he has gained gold, not with whom he lies.” But yes, coming out of the closet as a referent in a field, helps a lot, among other things, those who live from hidden sexual dissent and fear, and need to see that there are models beyond the hegemonic canon. Because it's important to spread out that reality is more plural than what we're shown.

“I’m very proud to say I’m gay and Olympic champion. When I was younger, I thought I would never get anything, because I am. I always felt lonely, different and out of place. Something told me that it wouldn't be as good as society expected. I want any young LGBT to see that they don’t care what they feel right now, they’re not alone,” Daley said.
