To play in a club in Gipuzkoa it will not be mandatory to participate in school sport
  • After being ordered by the Superior Court of the Basque Country to immediately comply with the ruling against school sports, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa informs that it will "accept and respect" the decision, that it will not appeal, and that it will await the resolution of the previous appeal to the Supreme Court of Spain. In the meantime, therefore, children under the age of 13 who want to join a sports club do not necessarily have to participate in the Multikirol program.

Last January, the Superior Court of the Basque Country ruled against school sport, appealing to a family in Pasaia, and the matter has reignited the debate, the freedom to choose the sport that the child wants on the one hand, and the model that favors educational and integrative objectives on the other.

This year, 17,910 children are playing school sports in Gipuzkoa, and 11,283 of them are playing in at least one club. These children, therefore, would have the right to not continue in the school sport after the Easter holidays – they have four or five weeks to finish the Multikirol calendar. The decision of the Superior Court of the Basque Country may not have much impact on the course that is about to end, but the situation may be different from that of 2025-26.

Sports MP Hozane Álvarez explained that her commitment is to "build a non-exclusive model of school sport", and that all children should have the "right to practice sport". It is committed to continue working with the actors involved in the return of school sport, while reaffirming that it is the responsibility of public institutions to protect and promote the right to practice sport. Meanwhile, the Spanish Parliament will await a decision by the Spanish Supreme Court.
