Geroa Bai has stated in the Foral Parliament that "he will work to repeal" the PAI educational model
  • In view of the May elections, the PSN will continue to defend, together with Navarre Sumario, the public system that puts the foreign language before the Basque country. EH Bildu criticizes the “botch” that the “imposition of English” has brought. Left-Ezkerra recalls the priority that official languages should have "by law" and we can ask "not to harm" the Basque language.

From the perspective of the PSN politician, Jorge Aguirre, “taking into account the law and sociolinguistic reality”, the Foral Government guarantees the possibility of learning “Spanish, Basque, English or German”. That was what was said yesterday in plenary. However, of the four languages mentioned, the Ministry of Education of Carlos Gimeno applies only to the Basque language the offer by number of speakers, since learning in Spanish is fully guaranteed and English and German are not official.

If education is not offered in Basque, obviously the number of speakers who claim to define the sociolinguistic reality will not have any evolution. The Zoning Law also does not require that residents and local councils unanimously establish model D, as recently happened in the municipalities of Mañeru and Lerín in the non-vascophony zone.

These latter cases have led to the educational breakdown of the Government of Navarra. Bai’s spokeswoman Maria Solana Geroa made a clear statement about her party’s agreement for the next term: “We are going to work for a new foral decree that repeals the PAI model.” In this regard, it clarified that it aims to “ensure the presence of indigenous languages” and to promote a “multilingual model” that includes two other foreign languages.

Bakartxo Ruiz de EH Bildu opted for the "sum of cultures and languages". "We hope that common sense will prevail and that sectarian policies will be neglected to take advantage of our linguistic richness and not deprive students of opportunities." Regarding the learning of foreign languages, he denounced that the PAI model has been “imposed” through “bottoms”.

This argument coincides with Left Left Left. Marisa de Simon regretted that Navarra is "in a situation we don't want". “Own languages should not be as important in the curriculum as foreign languages.” In this sense, he pointed out that all students from Navarra should know at least the Basque.

For Pedro González Navarra, representative of Suma, “the Basque immersion model is not an educational system, but a political campaign by EH Bildu”. Based on this idea, he argued that “the PAI model is seen as a threat that endangers Euskaldunization in Navarra”.

Ainhoa Aznárez, from Podemos, accused Navarre Sumari that his speech has been as “alarmist” as ever and said that “while learning foreign languages does not harm native people” is necessary.
