Harassment and Retaliation of a Teacher
The University of the Basque Country has activated a protocol against gender-based violence in relation to complaints about harassment and retaliation by a teacher from the Faculty of Letters
  • The UPV/EHU Rectorate Group's note to LUZ states that "from the moment it became aware of the case, the procedure defined by the protocol is in progress". Denuncias Euskal Herria has published on its Instagram account five anonymous accusations against the same teacher, without giving the name of the teacher, but specifying that he is a professor of Hispanic Philology. LARA has spoken with three former students who have completed this degree in different years, and a fourth person who has known the case for a long time. Four have given the name of the same teacher, four have corroborated several of the behaviors described in the complaints, and one has reported that the teacher had sexually assaulted him. According to several complaints, a formal complaint was filed against the teacher at the university, but there has been no change.     He said he had received several formal complaints against the teacher.

"From the moment the Rectorate Group became aware of the case, the procedure defined by the protocol is in progress. The university has received several formal complaints. An immediate response is being provided by the Government Team in collaboration with the Equality Directorate. The necessary measures will be taken, following the steps specified in the protocol", is what the Rector Group of the UPV/EHU has communicated to the press in relation to the complaints of harassment and altercations against a professor of Hispanic Philology published by LUZ.

"Guaranteeing and protecting the rights of all groups, especially victims, is a priority for the university. In order for the university to be an area of tolerance and respect, we are committed to all groups of the university, both students and all employees. Proof of this is the proliferation of complaints that we have recently had, which is being managed with absolute priority in the Rectorate Group", they point out.

Denunciation a few years ago

The information published by LUZ on Wednesday indicates that a formal complaint against this teacher was made several years ago in the UPV, and sources of this medium say that "there has been no significant change". The UPV has had a new rectorate since January, headed by Joxerramón Bengoetxea.

LUZ has tried to contact the accused teacher to refute the information or give him the opportunity to receive his words. On Monday morning, a message was sent to both his personal and work e-mail. For the moment, he didn’t want to answer.
