Last Saturday, the Young Assembly of the Old Party organized the Gazte Eguna of the neighborhood. Taking advantage of the pasacalles that accompanied the program, several young people opened the Guardetxe de Urgull, “abandoned negligently by the City Hall” for years.
Guardetxea has been closed for several years after a decade of management by the Banda Bat association. Due to the poor state of the building, the City Hall no longer awarded and sealed the building in summer 2019.
In the context of this dynamic, they wanted to denounce that “political leaders and big owners put the interests of the economic elite before the lives of the neighbors”. They regard the situation in the Old Party as extreme: “The proliferation of hotels, tourist pensions or multinational companies, the indefinite increase in the price of housing, the process of privatization of the pier and other public spaces, the presence of casinos and gambling halls, the closure of small shops, etc.”
In addition, they stressed that in January it will be four years since the City Hall of San Sebastián closed the gaztetxe Kijera and denounced that with this measure the situation of the young people of the neighborhood was worse: “Leaving us on the street, condemning ourselves to be among us without physical spaces of socialization, organization and leisure.”
AZGA thanks the participants in the program and calls to continue the opening of the Guardetxe. To do so, they have called an auzolan on Friday 16 from 16:30.
