University students protest genocide in Gaza
Palestinarekiko Erantzukizuna Plataforma 2024ko maiatzaren 08a

The struggle of American universities to claim the end of the Palestinian genocide and their right to freedom is very significant. The efforts of Zionism, with false accusations of anti-Semitism, are being turned against. Students and groups of workers, including American Jews, show the criminal Netanyahu as he has been all his life, an anti-informative character. Certainly, as Khared Balakate writes, this struggle goes beyond denouncing the suffering of the Palestinian people, the expoliation of lands, indiscriminate killings, the generation of hunger and the lack of all the essential issues for a decent minimum life. The genocide did not begin on 7 October, it has been for too many years throughout Palestine and especially in Gaza.

For many years, international organizations have insisted on the inhumanity of the Zionist State throughout Palestine and have presented Gaza as a very populated place where the right to life is not guaranteed. But the denunciation, European governments continue to maintain all kinds of aid and relations with a government that uses all means to kill and expel Palestinians from their land, including genocide. And, as always, it is civil society that we have to go out into the streets to denounce the passivity, complicity and cooperation of our governments.

"We are very pleased that young people are also moving in our universities, although we believe that the situation requires a general strike of students and workers"

Many people have been surprised by the movement of camps for young American university students. Police forces in the United States oppress them hard, threatening Zionism to make life impossible for them both in their studies and in their later development. We are being taught a great deal about how to defend human rights.

Let us hope that students and workers from Western countries, and in particular from the EU, will receive the torch and join the protests of this attractive youth against the largest massacre in the 21st century. It seems that the initiative has begun to spread in some places, such as the University of Valencia, where on Monday a camp began on the Philosophy campus, but we believe it should be extended to the rest of the state universities. The Basque society, not the Basque Government, the arms companies or the CAF, has always maintained sensitivity towards the Palestinian cause. We are now very pleased that young people are also moving in our universities, although we believe that the situation requires a general strike by students and workers and protests much stronger than what we are doing. From the Responsibility for Palestine platform we want to encourage this.
