Ane Alava, spokesman for Ernai
"Gazte Topagunea is a showcase for community and neighborhood life"
  • Last year the Gazte Martxa was held from Zugarramurdi to Elizondo and this year the Topagune will be held from 6 to 9 April in Elorrio. Whatever its form, the youth organization Ernai wants to maintain its “more special and pampered initiative” to bring the community together. They have presented a broad programme in which the party and the “reflection on everything” have room.

This year's Topagune is a way of living.

That is the motto we have used, because we want to put another way of life into practice. The society we represent and demand aims at independence, socialism and feminism, and for that we need awareness, ambition, desire and rebellion. But above all we want to reclaim organized life in the community. Neoliberalism isolates us to maintain a complete system of dependent reproduction, and at the individual level it is very difficult to get out of it. But collectively, we believe it's possible to fight and build what we want.

Can these ideas be put into practice?

That is the intention of the meeting forums, and I would say that we are achieving it in part. It is a showcase for community and neighborhood work; we have been preparing about 100 young people for a long time and many more will be working from 6 to 9 April. We also want to build everything else within the values we defend: leisure, organization, program, environment and relationships, among others.

They have presented a comprehensive programme. What would you highlight?

Another year we will combine party and debate, but we will spend more time on reflection than last year. Especially the first two days, Thursday and Friday of the meetings. We have tried to bring topics of debate to the forefront: for example, how we would have to make an energy transition from Euskal Herria in the face of the climate emergency; or the great event will have a greater prominence in the gaztetxe model hausnarketa.Larunbatean and on Sunday we will hold the Aberri Eguna.

He will be in Elorrio as in 2002.

Ernai will be ten years old in March and we wanted to make a gesture to our predecessors. This peculiarity is found in Elorrio, on the one hand, because of its regional significance and, on the other, because of the uniqueness of this Meeting Forum, reported by those present 21 years ago. We hope that this will also be the case for us.

What taste of mouth did those of last year leave you with?

The young march was very important. After many years of follow-up, there was a two-year stop to the pandemic and we saw the initiative in danger. We wanted to make a strong return, and we think we did. The assessment was very positive. It served, above all, to empower the new generations. The year before the pandemic, there were many young people who joined the militancy and could not make a proper relief conditioned by the context. We had the feeling that the gap in the organization emerged. In 2022, for its part, we returned to the situation with the support of the Meeting Forum and the Third Congress of Ernai, and strengthened us to continue fighting for another ten years.

How important is the meeting point of Euskal Herria on the agenda of Ernai?

Spring meetings are the most important, singular and pampered initiative organized by Ernaik to bring the community together, whatever its form. It serves us to implement what we defend and also to reach the new young people. Throughout the year, however, we work in many other areas, starting with addressing the shortcomings of our neighbourhoods and villages.

The song of the march was a poetry by the Ibil Bedi group last year. What is this year?

The 2023 meeting will also have a song and we will soon be able to enjoy it.
