Message from the Argia team at the Argia Awards: Interesting times
  • Today is a day of joy, we celebrate the Argia Awards in person: the faces of always and the new faces are around these tables. We last met in 2020, then COVID-19 and bans went all the way up… and the conflicting geopolitical climate, the energy crisis, an increasingly black climate emergency, the fearsome impoverishment of citizenship, the critical situation of the public health system…
ARGIA @argia 2023ko urtarrilaren 27a

As our colleague Pello Zubiria tends to say, times of interest for journalism, because in turmoil times there is a lot to be told, and in many ways, in ARGIA we have addressed the challenge. With the help of the people who are presenting today’s event, we have made a special audiovisual monitoring of the great bertsolaris championship; little by little we are expanding the offer in the world of podcasts; we have premiered this week a new web (as always in free license); we have opened a study in ARGIA to make the recordings in order… That is the future, we have heard it many times.

But the role is very present, our subscribers have made it clear that they also appreciate LIGHT on paper. According to CIES, the number of readers on paper grows year after year, being rare in these times, and we are clear: “No, paper has not died”, because journalism needs all the media.

In times of crisis and in the face of the hardest moments of capitalism, values within the home acquire all their meaning.

We live in interesting times and dark times, with great uncertainty, anger and polarization. We are aware of the important social function of journalism and try to do quality work. We want to give keys to help understand the landscape, to do a journalism that asks questions and seeks answers, that flees from unilateral and dogmatic versions to nuances, an honest journalism, that denounces injustices, critical to power, that offers alternatives to avoid falling into despair.

But committed journalism has great enemies. Proof of this is the almost normalized Mordaza Law. In the world, 86 journalists are killed and silenced in 2022 for their work. It's UNESCO data. And let us not forget that a journalist from the Basque Country, Pablo González, has been in a Polish cell for 11 months.

These are interesting times to confirm the soundness of our project. In times of crisis and in times of the toughest times of capitalism, because values within the home acquire all their meaning. We believe in mutual care, in horizontal internal organization, in the importance of keeping the team united and strong.

And trust and input from our community are our main support. 2023 In this principle we are more than when we started 2022 and for the seventh year in a row we continue to earn subscriptions. Being aware that this is not usual at this time, we are very grateful. In over 300 homes, we have been receiving ARGIA for over 50 years, and we have a representation today. Those on this table have been ARGIA's comrades for over half a century, because in some cases the children have kept the subscription started by their parents, because ARGIA is also a chain that has not been interrupted from generation to generation. Thank you Antton Dorronsoro, Nekane Aierbe, Mila Manterola, Arantzazu Royo, Juan and Feli Aleman, and Jon and Lukas Barandiaran.

ARGIA members are our main support. 2023 At this start we are more than when we started 2022 and for the seventh year in a row we keep winning subscriptions

We are also more thankful for the campaign we have recently conducted: to give a boost to those who have decided to learn Euskera in places where Euskera is not official, 85 students will receive ARGIA for free in their homes. In the twenty-first century, Euskera is not yet official in three areas of the Basque Country: Iparralde, Navarre to the south and Treviño. Without a sterile division, we want to contribute to the construction of a Basque Country that is the official Basque Country and a right of all, Basque Country where learning Basque is free.

We have a thriving community and unique allies to collaborate, because we don't imagine a future if it's not surrounded by good people. basque

In the media ecosystem in which some are awarded with public money and others are excluded, the administration is in charge of betting on the media in Basque

Yes, these are interesting times in communication, the media can give important qualitative leaps to make journalism better and more effective; it is up to you to decide what role the public administration wants to play along that path. In the media ecosystem fed by the correlations of forces, power relations and different interests, the media ecosystem in which some are rewarded with public money and others are excluded, the administration is in charge of betting on the media in Basque in the distribution of public money, betting on a journalism universe based on Euskera, diversity, quality and criticity.

We will continue to work, the Basque Country and independence. Let's keep doing interesting journalism in interesting times.
