The European Parliament has been promoting the use of a single charger for more than ten years. At the press conference on 7 June, Alex Agius Saliba, European Parliament correspondent, explained that the aim for the fall of 2024 is to use only the USB C charger.

The proposal was presented in a press release published in September 2021. Initially the agreement included laptops, mobile phones, digital cameras, video consoles and tablets. Finally, other devices such as eReaders, mini-headsets, keyboards and navigation systems have been added to the list. The European Parliament has announced that all small electronic devices will use the USB C charger.

The main reason for wanting to drive the use of a single charger is the reduction of electronic waste. In fact, according to the European Parliament, discarded chargers each year generate 11,000 tonnes of electronic waste. Furthermore, the main objective of the European Parliament is for consumers to be able to charge different devices with the same cable, so they will have to spend less on buying a new device in new chargers.

'Lightning'

Although many companies have already worked with this charger, there is a large company that uses its own chargers in most cases: Apple. Although on some devices you use a USB C charger, on some computers, for example, you will need to dismiss your Lightning charger. However, according to the information filtered in mid-May, an iPhone with USB C charger is being prepared by 2023.
