In a communiqué, the Polisario Front of Western Sahara has reported on this decision by the Caribbean island of Minsk. He explained that the measure is the result of the Spanish Government having supported the position of Morocco, which is autonomy for the Sahara.

“The proposal of the Moroccan occupant is illegal, wants to legitimize strongly the annexation of the territories of Western Sahara and wants to reject the inalienable rights of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence.”

The Front spoke harshly: “Sanchez’s government is using the Sahara to do miserable business with the occupier of Morocco.” It has stressed that Spain has its own responsibility as a territorial manager, both before the citizens and before the UN itself, and has stressed that Spain has responsibility. The Front has also once again addressed the UN to organise a referendum on self-determination once and for all.

The Polisario has thanked the political movements and forces that have shown their support for the people of Western Sahara “for reminding the Government that it must respect international law in the Sahara and respect the right of self-determination”.
