About 50 people from the Southern Basque Country participated in this clandestine anti-fascist organization, providing assistance to prisoners and fugitives, and spying for allies during World War II. The net fell in 1940, when the Germans occupied France. The German and Spanish police then entered the Basque Government delegation in Paris and obtained information about the network in this way.
Born in 1890 in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Alava Sautu was an agronomist and chemist. When the pro-Franco troops rebelled in 1936, he was the head of the Municipal Assembly of the PNV in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Alava Sautu was arrested when the net bearing her surname collapsed. On May 6, 1943, the patriotic leader was executed in Madrid, and 19 other members of the network were sentenced to long prison terms.
The tribute will start at ten o’clock in the morning on the Senda route, in front of the Zulueta Palace. There will be a plaque there. In addition, the exhibition and documentary will be expanded, remembering the work of the women who formed a network with Basque prisoners and in support of their allies. In fact, it was especially the women who formed the network.
Family members of the victims of the Franco regime will be present at the memorial. In the institutional sphere, the President, Iñigo Urkullu, the Deputy General, Ramiro González, and the Mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Gorka Urtaran, among others, will participate.
