Victory at the incinerator in Florence: the project is definitively rejected by the Council of State
  • If Rossano Ercolini, President of the Zero Waste Europe Coordinator, said that the future of the new incinerators in Italy was played in Florence, great news has arrived for those who are trying to fight the incineration of waste and support the Zero Waste model (Rifiuti Zero): The Italian State Council (which in Spain has the functions of the Constitutional Court) has definitively rejected the incinerator project in La Piana, near Florence.

The Gallant of the Ass for Prime Minister and former Mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi, who has promoted cremation throughout Italy. A magnificent victory for the Rifiuti Zero movement and especially for the women of the Mamme No Inceneritore association who have mobilized without interruption against the cremation of Florence. After 15 years of struggle against the incinerator project that the local authorities wanted to build, the Italian Council of State has given them the reason. Previously in 2016 the court dealing with environmental matters had decided to cancel the permits, but the authorities of the Tuscan region were determined to carry out what they had established as the symbol of the new incinerators in Italy. Until last week the judges in Rome gave him his last butt.

The news has caused a stir in the Italian media...

... and the satisfaction generated by it has been expressed by several agents. Among them, the medical association Medicina Democratica, which investigates the links between expectancy and health and denounces pollution throughout Italy:

In the struggle against this incinerator in recent years, the women of the Mamme No Inceneritore have played a special role.

From their Facebook page the women of Mamme No Inceneritore spread a hopeful message: "This confirms for us that the fight is worth it and that without people nothing has to be decided. Now, go ahead with the alternative! ". An amazing party was held on May 25th at the mythical Piazza della Signoria in the city:

On the other hand, the company QThermo, which was going to make the incinerator, has also announced its intention: "We're going to ask for compensation." Almost everything (except the meeting with decent judges) is familiar to the people of Gipuzkoa.
