The Prosecutor's Office first investigates Petronor for dumping
  • Petronor confirmed that between 9 and 16 November there were "higher benzene value" emissions than the currents in one of the cabinas of the Muzkiz refinery (Bizkaia). According to an environmental audit published on 5 December, the number of emissions allowed has been higher in more days.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bizkaia has opened for the first time a criminal investigation into the discharges to the Petronor company in Bilbao. The coordinator, Coke Ez, has indicated that she will investigate an environmental crime by dumping benzene in the affected area.

Benzene is a chemical compound that is harmful to people's health and which generates cancer.

In a statement, Petronor pointed out that “at all times the Basque Government has been duly informed and has monitored discharges.”
