In an interview with Radio Vitoria, the Councillor for Welfare, Youth and Demographic Challenge of the Basque Government has called on the Spanish Government for "serious, contrasted and clear" immigration policies. Nerea Melgosa says that what is happening in the Canary Islands is "structural" and not conjunctural: We have to treat it as it is. He also recalled that in the summer of 2018 there was a similar situation to that experienced in Andalusia and Levante. I mean, it's not "new."

The President of the Spanish Government has stated that it is "necessary to have a serious debate" on migration policies in order to know what the state's "strategic plan" is for its development. But given the current situation, Minister Melgosa has asked to design "a contingency plan" for the humanitarian crisis that is being experienced in the Canary Islands, "as has been done for other humanitarian crises". "We have been calling for months for batteries to be put in place," Melgosa said.

In addition, it responds to what the president of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, said during his trip to Africa: Sánchez spoke of the "circular migration", that is, of returning as it has left his country in Africa, not by its own decision, but by a system and a plan; Melgosa states that the European Pact on Migration talks about the voluntary return of people and not about deportations. "Mass deportations are illegal," he added.
