On Saturday, numerous Basque cultural agents met in Baiona to denounce the obstacles of the Basque country in the Northern Basque Country and demand effective language policies beyond the “appearance”. More than 3,000 people, according to the URL0 count, claimed the time to expand the new legal framework.

The 22 students and the four teachers of the Estitxu Robles College in Baiona, who started the bike from Bordeaux, came to the demonstration and were applauded. In the working capital, several agents convened by the Basque Confederation were gathered: Azterketa Euskaraz, Euskalgintza Kontseilua, Hizkuntza Eskubideen Behatokia, AEK, Ikastolen Elkartea, Euskal Herrian Euskaraz, Gazte Kaltzaleen Sgi

In the final reading, Xabi Ibarburu, president of the Summer Center, and Elorri Falxa, professor of Seaska, asked for the official status of the Basque Country. They denounced the obstacles in Ipar Euskal Herria, such that the lower could pass in Basque. Seaska students have acquired the right to pass the brebeta in Euskera, but in the other centers they did not: on Saturday they claimed the need to do the exams entirely in Euskera. “It’s time to create full speakers capable of transmitting the Basque language.”

VII. The Socio-linguistic Survey has confirmed that in young generations Euskera is gradually recovering, but the use is not: “The Basques are increasingly marginalized, the use is decreasing and the linguistic level is decreasing”, they warned in the mobilization. They ask the institutions to open a new cycle to revolutionize the situation, saying that “a real investment” must be made to develop the “vital capital of this country for survival”, the Basque country. Insufficient so far, they demanded more economic and political resources and demanded investments “beyond the apparent”.

Institutional demands

In fact, Berria has pointed out that the representatives of the institutions that must make those decisions were not in the process of mobilising. Antton Kurutxarri, president of the Basque Public Organization (EEP), Jean Rene Etxegarai, president of the Basque Navarro College, and parliamentarians of Iparralde were missing.

The requests were addressed to these institutions and local elected officials from the Basque area. They called for more strength from the PSE and stressed the need for the French State to develop a public policy for the Basque people, as did Brittany and Occitania. The agents of the Basque Confederation expressed their willingness to participate in the elaboration of a new convention for the Basque Country, but questioned the institutional interest. They claimed it's time to change the laws.
