To live the Basque
Belen Urrutia Abio 2022ko maiatzaren 31

I was at a Kike Amonarriz conference on Euskaraldia. In it he talked about the illusion, hope, motivation and changes of customs that the Basque Country Aldia has had in people to promote the use of the Basque Country. On the radio, Olatz Altuna, technician of the Sociolinguistic Cluster, states that the use of Euskera in the street has stabilized or is in an impasse. If I have to tell the truth, I was not surprised.

Because, often, those of us who know Euskera don't. At the back table, a group of Basque elderly women spoke in Spanish and fire with students who had recently joined the Basque education in a bar. One student then asked me: "Why, Bethlehem? ". I didn't know what the answer was.

"For Euskera to live, initiatives such as Euskaraldia and the manifestation of 21 May are necessary, but are not enough"

On the other hand, there are people who understand Euskera and have problems speaking, because they are ashamed, because they do not have the capacity of their mother tongue, because those we know do not have patience with them… .

And as if it were not enough, there are those who do not feel the need to learn and use the Basque language. “Why do I have to learn from the Basque language? I know Spanish, therefore, I have no problem.”

It is clear to me that initiatives such as Euskaraldia and the demonstration of 21 May are necessary for the Basque people to live, but they are not enough. People have to be attached to the Basque, believe that it is a treasure of a people and defend it through its use. And I think that's where we fail. I can be wrong!
