Minister Vergriete explained that this option would be possible in 24 locations in the Northern Basque Country in tension, but the College wants to include five other villages, including Senpere. From 2025 the maximum amount possible would be limited.

Vacation rentals such as Airbnb in France can have a 71% tax reduction on the tax. Against this, several mobilizations have been carried out in the Northern Basque Country, because many cannot find housing while the tourist rentals rise. The Minister is in favour of changing the tax system but says that it must be done by law.

Daniel Oltzomendi, vice-president of the College’s tourism department, was critical of the lack of measures to undo the tax advantages of tourist rentals.
