The Young Socialist Coordinator installed a camp for Palestine in the cathedral of the Good Shepherd on Wednesday in San Sebastian. Following the floods of thousands of students and young people from all over the world, hundreds of young people have come together and spent the night in the camp. They note, however, that solidarity gestures are not enough if the closest leaders are not denounced, and they denounce the complicity of the European Union in the massacre being perpetrated by Israel. They warn that it would not be possible to carry out the genocide without the direct support of the West and, in particular, of the EU.

The GSP has pointed to the need to multiply civic mobilisations and to put pressure on different fronts for Israel to take action against them. As you have explained, the camp has come to make a contribution along this road. On Thursday at 19:00 a demonstration will be held in Donostia, starting from the Good Shepherd. On Friday the Socialist Council of Euskal Herria called a demonstration against NATO “against war, genocide and austerity”. The San Sebastian camp will continue until then and the initiative will end in order to join the mobilisation.

Support for Palestinian resistance

From the campsite they wanted to show their support for the Palestinian resistance. They have explained that “the true freedom of Palestine can only come from the destruction of the fascist and colonial state of Israel”, and have announced that they will continue to fight on that path for Western governments and companies to break with the Zionist entity.

They denounce that the Western authorities continue to support Israel “as they speak for settlement and peace.” They say that the “symbolic gestures” carried out by different countries should be understood in the context of the European elections of 9 October, have criticised the existence of strategies to win votes. As an example, the governments of Spain, Norway and Ireland have recognised the Palestinian State. They have denounced that this formal recognition will not “alter in any way” the situation of the Palestinian people, and have questioned that such a gesture can be made “while they continue to drive the genocidal state of Israel”.

The organizers say that if European countries and political parties really want to end the genocide, they have to “immediately cancel” support for Israel.
