  • They denounce that immigrants who have died at the border are "the result of political measures on the border" and that those who arrive in the continental Basque Country also experience "extreme situations".

Xuti Gaztea has denounced the situation of young immigrants and raised a number of demands. About 30 young people have gathered on Saturday at the border between Hendaia and Irún.

In the last two years seven people have died trying to cross the border and three more. They denounce that these deaths are not "empty accidents, but the result of political measures on the border". They say that the border between the Southern Basque Country and the Northern Basque Country has been under police control for months, and that immigrants are the most affected by these measures. As a result of police controls, immigrants take more dangerous paths to cross the border.

Among those who manage to reach the Northern Basque Country, they have denounced that they only have "obstacles to install", such as "arrests, precariousness or expulsions". An example of this is the detention center near the border bridge, whose poor living conditions have caused "extreme situations" in recent years.

They explain that in the case of young immigrants the situation is "even more violent". They say that although it is a right of minors to attend school and not to be expelled, it is not always fulfilled.

Decisions in Basque Country

Xuti Gazte has shown his willingness to continue "building a host people", but he has acknowledged that he cannot "take great steps" while decisions on borders are made from Paris. Therefore, they claim that decisions on the border should be made in the Basque Country.
