Experience classrooms also in Basque Country
Marije Manterola Ander Trigos 2024ko maiatzaren 06a

Since 1996/97, the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) organizes every year and with great success the courses called Experience Classrooms for 50 people over 55 years, without requiring any degree to participate in them.

The course takes place in two phases. The first has a duration of four years and, at the end of it, the University Degree in Human Sciences is given, which is not official and, therefore, has no value for the world of work. The second, the University Courses for Adult People, has a duration of three years and for their realization it is necessary to be in possession of the aforementioned degree. These last courses allow attending several classrooms at the UPV/EHU, but only as listeners.

The annual activity is divided into two four-month periods, with compulsory or core and optional subjects. Throughout the course, eighteen core subjects are taught, all in Spanish, and selected by the students of the 24 optional subjects offered. Of the latter, only three are taught in Basque.

Several groups of students have asked on several occasions for the teaching of courses also in Basque, but those responsible have responded strongly to the last request, without giving any information

With regard to linguistic data, we can say with complete confidence that the presence of Euskera in the courses to which we refer is scarce, that is, almost zero. It is understandable that at first almost everything is done in Spanish, as people over 55 who worked well reading and writing in Basque would be few. But since then, things have changed a lot, and there are many days that have been taught in Euskera.

For this reason, several groups of students have asked on several occasions for courses to be taught also in Euskera, but those responsible have responded with a "no" to the last petition, without giving any information about it. Perhaps because behind the request there is a small group with no firm base.

Thus, this year several students, alumni and Euskaltzales have created the Aulas de la Experiencia platform also in Euskera, with the objective that the courses can also be carried out in Euskera. And for the request we are going to make to be taken into account, we need the help of the Basque community. In addition to the groups that make up the Euskalgintza, we also want to bring together the most common citizens to make the organizers see that many people see the project with good eyes. Therefore, if you agree with the platform’s intentions, please join the following address: https://forms.gle/TEJbgUNG5RtRNMdK8. If you do, we will thank you very much. And if you want to get in touch with us, you'll be at esperientziarengelaeuskarazere@gmail.com.
