They prevent the use of a building from the City Council of Bilbao to the author of a book with the Spanish extreme right in the spotlight
  • As an example, the Vox party was going to be presented in the building La Bolsa de Bilbao the book that talks about the Spanish extreme right. However, those responsible have prevented the presentation in the building owned by the City Hall, arguing that “the municipal centers are not spaces to deal with political, religious or union issues”.

Organized by Ongi Etorri Errefuxiatuak, Hitz & Hitz Foundation and OMAL groups, UN MEP Podemos Miguel Urbán was to present a book on the eruption of the fascist party Vox this Monday in Bilbao. However, the presentation could not be made: The City Council of Bilbao is the property of the La Bolsa Building where the presentation was to be made and has not given them, since “the municipal centers are not spaces to deal with political, religious or union issues”, according to URL0.

Despite the prohibitions, the book was finally presented at the Hika Ateneo. The organizers have denounced “censorship coming from a municipal institution” and the author of the book has recalled that he has participated in four other acts in the same place, all related to politics. “In January we organised an event with the same organizers to talk about the extreme European right. The only thing I can understand is that it has feared the Basque Government and the City Hall of Bilbao; and when you are afraid to talk about these things, it means that you have lost”, explained Urbán in that medium.

Emergency of Vox. Notes to combat the Spanish extreme right (Emergency of Vox. Notes to face the Spanish extreme right) deals with the rise of the Spanish extreme right, focusing on the arrival of Vox. He relates the appearance of the ultra-right party to the worldwide turn towards totalitarianism, although the writer does not believe that a return to fascism is taking place; for Urbán, what is happening is “an authoritarian outcrop that goes beyond the Vox”. The key to coping, according to the author, lies in the construction of a community.

“Classic antifascism is not worth it, because Vox enters the homes through social media, and that’s something new,” says Urbán. As he explained, the aspect of the book is not as “stigmatizing” as Spain 2000 or the Madrid Social Home, and that has helped Vox get into the people. The writer has stressed that many of those who have rejoined are young: “Vox steals youth to PP.”

The aim of the book, according to Urbán, is for people to discuss and analyze how to defeat the extreme right and reaffirm the cry “It is that they pass”.
