They ask in Orio to change the names of five streets related to Spanish colonialism
  • The members of the gaztetxe Etxeluze have changed their name to five streets of Orio earlier this month, according to a video. These are three military personnel serving the Spanish Empire and two streets in honour of their high officials. This claim is not new. At the beginning of the 2019 Youth Festivities, young people symbolically changed the names of those five streets.

They have asked through a video and initiative to change the name of the streets Urdaire, Areizaga, Endaia, Oa Almiranta and Antxiola from the street of Orio. The boat has climbed to the net:

Orio's neighbours have denounced that they are "five criminals turned into heroes of this kind." In 2019, the local media received the profile of these five people:

Juanes de Urdaire (1550-1606). Urdaire Street. Born in Orio, he was captain of whaling. He was the first to serve as captain of the naval arsenal. Admiral of the Army of Hard Land, war fleet and "trade" that united the Spanish Empire with the colonies of Peru.

Antonio de Areizaga (?-1720) Calle Aritzaga. He was an admiral of the King's Army. Captain of the warship San Pedro.

Tomas Endaya XVIII.mendea. Plaza Endaia. He was captain of war in the province of Bay, twice mayor of Manila and three generals of the South Sea Route (Philippines). In 1710 he was a teacher of the entire army, that is, he held the second most important post.

Gabriel de Zoe (16th-17th centuries). Calle Almirante Oa. He was Secretary of King Philip III at the Royal Council of the Indies.

Manuel Antonio de Antxiola XVIII.mendea. Antxiola kalea. Carlos III.aren was a minister for years.

Instead of those five names, they have made a proposal to put some more popular names. And for this they have placed on the plates of those streets the following names: Calle Inude (by Antxiola), calle Euskara (by Aritzaga), calle Kixkurne (Urdaire), calle Gaupasero (by Almirante Oa), and plaza de la Bruja (by Endaia).

The ethnographer and writer Antxon Agirre (1946-2014), Orio, gold, according to KarKara the author of the book, "are those who have distinguished themselves in the arms race, have also been high officials of the Spanish administration, and people of letters, scholarly priests and other professions of great relevance".

At least one claim coming from 2019

They were held on the last weekend of September 2019. In the Youth Festivities there was talk about the change in the name of the streets. With a favorable attitude towards indigenous peoples and against the conquerors, these five streets were given the alternative names cited in Kalejira.

According to the chronicle of the local area over the Gazte Festa, the young people moved in Orio who has "collaborated in the construction of the killing and white supremacy" for admiring the names of Urdaire, Aritzaga, Endaia, Zoe and Antxiola. "In order not to repeat the mistakes of the past, we have to write from the point of view of crushed stories and treat these five oriotarras as criminals and not as heroes."

According to this chronicle, the group that organizes the Gazte Jaiak met with the City Hall and the City Hall transferred their willingness to make changes on the street and that the issue was being worked on. Two and a half years later, the pandemic has left unchanged.
