The Spanish Government is today voting on the proposal that Sahara should change its attitude.
  • On 5 April afternoon, Congress will discuss the non-legislative proposal presented by EH Bildu, ERC and Unidas Podemos. Mertxe Aizpurua explained that "what is sought is for the Congress of Spain to stand alongside the Saharawi people and for a political path to be promoted to resolve the problem of Western Sahara from international law".

EH Member Bildu Mertxe Aizpurua explained that "we look forward to the support of the majority of Congress, because all this proposal does is ratify the decision of NATO and the United Nations Commission to hold a referendum in Western Sahara". Aizpurua explained that this non-legislative proposal seeks to recover the historical position of the Spanish State, "and seeks to correct the unilateral decision that this Government has taken in this regard".

"The PSOE has the opportunity to rectify the error that has been made"

He described the action of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, as "error", who denied it to occur. "We believe that the PSOE today has the opportunity to correct that error, which is not the only one. To know where it is, whether it is next to the Saharawi people and their legitimate demands, or whether it is with Morocco and its constant blackmail. And if you want to make public opinion believe that you have not changed your mind, which is what you have repeated in recent weeks, you should have no hesitation in accepting this initiative, because the proposal we have tabled says nothing, that the PSOE has not defended before. If, on the contrary, you voted no or abstained, we think you will show your own image. We sincerely hope that this will not be the case, and that the PSOE will return to that place that should never have moved," he added.

Aizpurua has recalled that it was the Moroccan Government that made public the change of position of the Spanish Government and that ten days later it has not yet been clarified at what price its position has changed, without communicating with any other party of the Government. On Thursday, Sanchez will visit Morocco and Aizpurua said he does not have the support of any other party: "The consequences of that decision cannot be foreseen. Its economic, energy and diplomatic effects have already been noted. Algeria intends to raise the prices of the gas it transmits to the Spanish State, although it will keep the price for the rest of the European countries," he added.
