By 2023, military spending in the Spanish State will increase by 25.8%, from 9,791 million euros to 12,317 million euros. The Ministry of Finance reported yesterday on the agreement, following the Council of Ministers. At that meeting, the draft General State Budget Act was adopted for next year, which has already been forwarded to Parliament for processing.

Taking into account the specific programme for the modernisation of the Spanish Army, expenditure in the 2023 budget will be higher than the planned 8.4 per cent for the Ministry of Defence. An expenditure of EUR 4.9 billion is foreseen under this special programme, which includes agreements relating to the arms industry at state level, compared with EUR 3,011 million last year.

Thus, the "most progressive government in the history of Spain" has approved one of the most powerful military budgets in the history of the Spanish State, and has also been one of the largest increases from year to year. According to data from the Ministry of Finance, since the PSOE/UN Podemos coalition came to government in 2020, the military budget has increased by 42.5%.

Available to NATO

As agreed at the NATO summit in Madrid, the Spanish State has committed itself to the Atlantic Alliance to double military spending in a decade. By 2030, the goal was to achieve a defence budget of 2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP): EUR 24 billion, approximately. In this regard, the increase in military salaries is also being studied. Today, the military budget represents 1.03% of GDP.
