Next August in Euskal Herria, in Pamplona, a sub-22 Basque Ball World Championship is being fought. There the Basque pelotaris will be forced to participate with the selection of Spain or France. That was what they denounced at the Saturday event in Hendaia.
Amaia Larralde, who has renounced the Spanish team, and Ekhi Ziarrusta, who had already taken that step forward, read the statement, according to Berria: “We, as Basque pelotaris, recognize that we want to compete with the colors of our nation and with the melody of our hymn. Therefore, based on the collective and individual right of the selection of Euskal Herria to participate in official and international competitions, we demand the official status of the selection of Euskal Herria, composed of seven countries”. The pelotaris kept a banner with the motto: Not France, not Spain, ours is from Euskal Herria. Those who had left to give their support were going to give the Office.
The organizers of the project pointed out that the ball federations of the Basque Country, Bizkaia, Álava, Gipuzkoa and Iparralde have placed "obstacles" to the holding of the event. EH Bildu and EH Bai have shown their support and solidarity for the demands made by the pelotaris: “Euskal Herria is a nation and has the right to be represented with its selection in all international competitions.” The two political parties have pledged “to continue working in all areas with the aim of getting Basque sports teams to compete officially”.
