- The Basque Government Security Council, Estefanía Beltrán de Heredia, today announced that it has opened an internal investigation into the detention last Sunday of a mother and son in Bilbao. On the net, thousands of people watched the video in which there was a great deal of outrage among the citizens.
"As in all cases where malpractice is detected, we first have to analyze it internally and we are researching the video," said Safety Advisor Estefanía Beltrán de Heredia at a press conference. The video shows how the Ertzaintza stops a mentally ill person and his mother, who have been arrested. It was recorded by the neighbors and later disseminated on social networks.
The arrests took place at 16:00 on Sunday in San Francisco Street in Bilbao la Vieja, as we counted here.
Last Monday, SOS Racism de Bizkaia and other groups have denounced the sexual assault that took place in the Biscayan locality. They have added that in San Francisco’s Bilbaíno neighborhood there is more police presence than in the rest of the city’s neighborhoods, and that its migrant and racialized population is suffering “police abuse and mistreatment”.
