Reopen the community gardens of Errekaleor
  • Residents can occupy a garden plot in the occupied district of Vitoria-Gasteiz. A number of dozens of orchards have already been set up which, in addition to increasing their number, seek to strengthen the Community character of the project.

“If you would like to work a piece of land on a community project... If you want to share your experience with more people... If you are interested in self-management and horizontality... Get in touch with us at porrupatata@protonmail.com,” explains the project managers on social networks.

Food and community

Four years ago, Errekaleor's neighbors opened the grounds surrounding the neighborhood to all the Vitorians. The invitation was very welcome and today more than a hundred people work several dozen small orchards: elderly, young people, children, migrants, neighbors, born in Vitoria, families, individuals, groups. There is also a common garden, managed from the Errekaleor Assembly, in which the food generated is supplied to the needs of the neighborhood.

Errekaleor has reopened the possibility of occupying a plot to rethink the project after a paralyzed time. With the new call, in addition to creating new gardens, the managers want to promote mutual knowledge among all the participants and to deepen the Community and self-managed character of the project. For example, by convening collective auzolanes or by setting up collective management committees for certain responsibilities.

Also popular movements

Popular movements can also take a vegetable garden. This was done by the Interior Food Network of Vitoria a year ago. The neighbors cultivate the land in groups and leave the production in the place they have in the Casco Viejo de Vitoria-Gasteiz so that whoever wants it or needs it will pay it in return. Specifically, the call for neighborhood work has been opened on Tuesday: “We have to start working to be able to pick up communal vegetables in summer! The team of orchards has started to stop and we need the most hands to plant tomatoes and onions.”
