Persecution of refugees continues in the World Press Photo 2019
  • Photographer John Moore, who works for American giant Getty Images, has been awarded the first prize of the World Press Photo 2019. The jury has chosen a photograph taken on the U.S.-Mexico border from among the 78,801 images sent to the competition by 4,738 photographers.

In the photo of John Moore, the Honduran girl Yanela Sánchez is greeted crying while her mother, Sandra Sanchez, is detained by the Mupremio de Estados Unidos. The events took place on June 12, 2018 in Texas, days before President Trump announced he was going to start a “zero tolerance” policy on the border with Greece.

World Press Photo

The organizer of the competition is the World Press Photo group of the same name. It is a non-profit entity founded in 1955 and based in Amsterdam. The jury, composed of 13 international personalities – graphic editors, photographers and representatives of the major press agencies – chooses those who consider the best photographs and photographic reports in the world.
