For Sunday, February 9, the Zaldibar Enlightenment team has called for a meeting in Eitzaga at 12:30 to demand answers for the disaster of the Zaldibar landfill and to remember Joaquín Beltrán and Alberto Sololuze who died there. “One of the biggest ecological disasters in the Basque Country was caused by a hunger for money”, the callers lament that they did so because the Basque Government “allowed them to do so”. They added that, five years after the tragedy, none of the government “has assumed the slightest responsibility.”
February 6 marks the fifth anniversary of the collapse of the Zaldibar landfill, managed by Verter Recycling 2002 SL, on February 6, 2020. The accident buried two workers and blocked part of the AP-8 motorway. The landslide released a large amount of asbestos, causing a fire that lasted several days.
They denounce that the case that deals with crimes against the environment, after five years, is still in the stage of investigation and they are “annoyed”. Thus, Joaquín Beltrán and Alberto Sololuze will be remembered on Sunday.
