The Provincial Court of Madrid has suspended the trial against Xabi Alonso, which was to begin on Tuesday, questioning whether it is the court itself that has the competence to judge the case.

According to the complaint made by the Spanish Treasury, the former player scammed more than EUR 2 million and left EUR 2 million in cash. Initially, the Madrid Examining Court found no offence, but the Madrid Public Prosecutor ' s Office appealed the judgment and the judge reopened the case.

After knowing the court’s decision, Alonso stated that “I am convinced that I have done all things well, that I have helped from the beginning and have never hidden anything, that I have to defend and trust justice”.

“That’s why I’ve come here and I’m going to keep fighting to the end,” the former football player added.

In a few days the new date will be announced to continue the trial.
