An out-of-service Ertzaintza agent was arrested on Saturday morning and assaulted his wife with a knife. The Basque Government Security Advisor, Bingen Zupiria, spoke about the case in the SER: “At the moment he has been excluded from the Ertzaintza, while the judges make a decision.” In addition, he added that the internal regulations of the Ertzaintza consider these cases as “serious errors and possible causes of job exclusion”.

Zupiria has denounced that this is a "very serious" case, as it concerns domestic or gender violence. “The Ertzainas investigating the case believe it is gender-based violence and will inform the prosecutor’s office and the court, and then the justice will decide how to handle the case,” the Security Minister added.

The officer was released by the judges for a felony of serious threats. They stated that it was not gender-based violence, as the aggressor was registered as a woman at home. Apparently, she used the Trans Act to register as a woman. However, the Prosecutor’s Office believes that it did so in order to avoid being tried for gender-based violence, since the man was mistreating his wife before that date.

The resident association Lanberri de Txomiñene has condemned the facts and has joined the mobilization to denounce the facts.
