Recently the Basque prisoner Garikoitz Etxeberria has been isolated for defending the right to be alone in the dungeon. His isolation leads him to a hunger strike to demand respect for this right. A few days later, seven inmates in other prisons do the same. Shortly thereafter, the prison director ceded and took into account the right to Garikoitz. I am convinced that in places where the law works well there are no such incidents, but unfortunately, the frequent violation of the rights of prisoners in Spanish prisons makes this kind of strike quite common. And it's no wonder, because their bodies are the only resource left to prisoners before the pride of prison managers. For all these reasons, and for the fact that these strikes take place under precarious conditions, I believe that the prisoners have a great deal of merit. Finally, I have to say that I was struck by the treatment given by a well-known newspaper to the most sympathetic prisoners, who regarded them as stressful. Now it seems that to be supportive you have to be extreme.
