On March 18, the President of the Spanish State, Pedro Sánchez, published a letter addressed to Moroccan King Mohamed VI. In this letter, the Spanish President supported the autonomy project for Western Sahara as “the most serious, credible and realistic basis for resolving the conflict.” Thus, the Government of Spain adhered to the plan proposed by Morocco for the Western Sahara in 2007. It is an atypical attitude, which has never been manifested by a previous government, according to the Association of Friends of the RASD of Álava.

According to the Mutual Society, Spain is the administering power of the Sahara and this change of position is contrary to the United Nations resolutions, which have resolved that the Saharawi people "freely decide their future through the referendum on self-determination". In addition to breaching international law, the agents of the Sahara consider that with the arguments used in the letter, the Spanish State neglects its responsibilities with its colony.

“The position of Pedro Sánchez has been supported by the majority of his party; that is why we call for the mobilisation of the Algerian people to demand that the Socialist Party reconsider support for this historic betrayal,” they said. Alternating concentrations will also be held in other Basque capitals for this purpose.
