Food Cards for Vulnerable Families in Navarra
  • From the European Social Funds section, each year they allocated money to the Food Banks so that they themselves could channel food to the most deprived citizens. The change in management now comes: families with children will receive tickets for the purchase of their products. They will have between 130 and 220 euros, depending on the characteristics of the families, to buy basic food per month.

Wednesday is International Food Day and Thursday is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. In this context, several changes are coming from Europe in order to ensure that the most vulnerable people have access to minimum food. Until now, for example, an important fund of money for the Food Bank had come from Europe. The Food Banks were in charge of distributing food among the users of the establishments. And that is what is going to change: they will direct money to the most vulnerable families from the European Social Fund: the most vulnerable families with children will receive a card. With this card you can go directly to the purchase: The purchase price for commodities ranges from EUR 130 to EUR 220, depending on the characteristics of the family.

This new card distribution is already underway. Until September, 290 families have one for this month. In total, those who would need that help, yes, are 314. The budget for 2024 amounts to EUR 1.2 million. So far, half of the users of these tickets are minors and eight out of ten recipients of the minimum benefit are women. Last May they began distributing the aid in this new way: firstly with two families and since July 290 have been using it.

The impact "won't be that much"

The Food Bank of Navarre will undoubtedly undergo a change, but the president of the Food Bank of Navarre, Marisol Villar, considers that the damage will not be excessive. "Of the aid we received, only 8% came from Europe. The influence will not be so much. Therefore, they now say that the service can be worse and that they will have to make a greater effort to ensure that the food range is "complete" among their users.
