In addition to denouncing the lack of information, EH Bildu has asked the Basque Government to measure air quality in Elgoibar to find out what is breathing. "Among the substances being measured are dioxins and furans, both highly toxic. The data provided so far by the Basque Government are not accurate or complete, because they have not clarified the incidence of these toxic substances in localities near Ermua and Eibar as Elgoibar," they said.
In addition, EH Bildu considers that it is up to the City of Elgoibar to request concrete data, which is at stake for the health of the Elgoibartars. It therefore requests the City Council to request the Basque Government to measure air quality in Elgoibar.
EH Bildu stressed that the "disaster" in the Zaldibar landfill and the fire that followed caused concern to the Elgoibartars. They consider that this citizen's concern is very understandable, "especially if we take into account that the information coming from the Basque Government is insufficient and not complete. Last Friday we learned that the level of dioxins and furans in the mouths of defenders of the Department of Health is between 40 and 50 times higher than usual in urban centers. Based on these data, the population of Zaldibar, Ermua and Eibar have been asked to adopt preventive measures, among others, in those municipalities where school sport was suspended. But we still don't know what the influence of all this is on Elgoibar."
"Very concerned" about water quality
Last week EH Bildu asked the Ura Agency to assess water quality on the Ego-gain river and on the River Deba. In this sense, they have pointed out that they are "very concerned" about the results that are being made known. "Yesterday we learned that hydrocubes, nickel and cadmium have appeared in the Ego and Aixola streams. These substances will go to the River Deba and from there they will reach Elgoibar." That is why EH Bildu has once again called on the City Hall and the Basque Government to monitor the water quality of the River Deba in relation to Elgoibar.
For the monitoring of measurements
According to the City Council of Elgoibar via social networks, the air quality measurements around the Zaldibar landfill are carried out by the Department of Environment, Territorial Planning and Housing. Therefore, the City Council has warned that this is the official source of information and, "at the moment, there is no risk to health in Elgoibar." The City Hall has also reported a link to check the information regarding measurements taken daily: www.ihobe.eus
