The Mexican Government closed the Quito embassy and cut off its relationship with Ecuador on Sunday. Raquel Serur, Mexico's ambassador to Ecuador, has denounced that the police entered the Quito embassy to stop Jorge Glas, former vice president of Ecuador: "The capture to our embassy is so great that the present government of Ecuador still cannot size what it did to its people and the citizens of Ecuador are not worth it." This is the first time such an attack has taken place. They will report to the International Court of Justice the violation of the international rights they have suffered.

Glas ruled with Rafael Correa between 2013 and 2018 and is charged with corruption in Ecuador. In Mexico, on the contrary, they protect it by its political persecution. Mexico denounces that political asylum is "sacred" and that incorporation into the embassy is a "clear" violation of international rights. Glas is transferred to a maximum security prison in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Mexico has announced that the closure of the embassy is an "unlimited" decision, and the 1600 inhabitants of Ecuador will receive care through a network of dependency and the embassies of neighbouring countries.

Protection of many countries

At least 28 countries, the USA and Canada, have condemned and have sent their support to Mexico. Furthermore, the United Nations and the European Union have denounced what has happened.

"All governments must respect that diplomatic missions are inviolable. As established by the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the security of diplomats and their workers is a fundamental principle governing diplomatic relations," the European Union said. Compliance with this is "essential" to achieve "stability" and "international balance".

Honduran President Xiomara Castro has denounced the situation for violating the right to political asylum: "What they have done is unacceptable and violates international rights."
