Citizens of the Uribe Coast claim the need for a public day center

The citizens of the Uribe Coast and the agents dedicated to the care area have highlighted the need to join forces and a public day center. According to the Social Services Portfolio Decree of 26 October 2015, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia is responsible for the construction of a day centre for secondary and tertiary dependents. On April 27, at 12:00, the meeting will be held in the Plaza of the City Hall of Sopela.

They claim that apart from the fact that the day center is a necessity, it is a right: “Our community has the right to access quality public services that are outside of private interests.” They add that the day center is “obligatory” to provide dignified care throughout life, but without a “strong” community public network, this right is violated. In addition, they say that the responsibility for care work falls especially on women, and that subcontracting in private services “precarizes” the feminized sectors.

According to the Commonwealth, the population of the Uribe Coast is in the process of aging. For this reason, day centers are “essential” to guarantee the autonomy of people, prevention and reconciliation of families. On October 2, 2024, the Commonwealth met with those of the Social Action Department of the Provincial Council to offer them a place they have in Sopela. The objective was to be able to offer the service there, but as the model of day centers has changed, this idea has not been carried out.
