Why do the Basque evaluators make the students in Spanish?
  • In the diagnostic evaluation in Basque, carried out by the Basque Government, the educator who has gone to perform this external study has spoken in Spanish to students of about 16 years old, despite knowing Basque. It has been denounced by several professors at the Toki Alai Institute and is not an anecdote, because it has been repeated on several occasions and reflects a fundamental reality.

The professor at this institute in Irun has shown his discomfort: both in the diagnostic evaluation and in the PISA study, those who conduct the examination have been in Spanish. To Model D students, when everyone knows Euskera. “The young people of these ages, in our context, come to Spanish quickly to talk to each other, but the teachers do not fall into that game, they have to see that we live in Basque.”

If the exam is in Basque, why do the Spanish students do it? We asked the professor. “My theory is that among the young people they have wanted to express that they are Guayas, to approach their codes, but if we have to resort to Spanish to get closer to the young it is festive because somehow it is corroborating that being guaia is speaking in Spanish, which is false, and because it is also a message that diffuses among the young people that those who run the studies in Basque do not give them a true function or a practical value.”
