EAJ's Demand for Respect from JxCat
"We will consider the letter unreceived so that we do not have to answer it"
  • The PNV questioned JxCat’s strategy at the end of December saying that it is not possible to run a country “over the internet.” Carles Puigdemont’s party sent a letter to the leadership of the PNV asking them to commit themselves to “democracy” and the composition of the Catalan government. The response of Andoni Ortuzar, president of the Euzkadi Mental Assembly, was extraordinary: he said that he did not receive the letter to avoid the answer.

JxCat, concerned about the position of the nationalist party, wrote a letter to the leaders of the PNV on behalf of the 34 deputies of the Puigdemont party. Naiz has been informed that the Catalan nationalists were “surprised and uneasy” by numerous statements by Iñigo Urkullu, who questioned “the veracity of the Catalan government and its strategy and decisions to faithfully comply with the results of the elections of 21 December”.

For this reason, the MPs of JxCat have demanded “respect for our MPs”, as well as “respect for the decision of citizens committed to self-determination in Catalonia”: “We ask you, after all, with the results of the votes that promise to commit to democracy and restore our institutions, led by President Puigdemont.”

The president of the EBB, Andoni Ortuzar, sent a letter on February 2 to Elsa Artadi, president of the JxCat Parliamentary Group: “Due to the friendly relations that unite PNV and myself with Catalonia, I prefer to consider the letter you sent to me as unreceived and not to respond in this way. Whenever and for whatever you want, we will always be available to meet you in Catalan or Basque lands.”

Although the reason why the PNV initially did not agree on budgets with the Spanish government was the repeal of Article 155, protecting the interests of Catalonia, it seems that the relations between the PNV and JxCat have been compromised for a long time. The JxCat letter also referred to the budget submission: “We are convinced that no democracy would understand that in a situation of political repression, aid would be given to those who have sewn the flag with violence, repression and refusal to dialogue, putting their flag, the Spanish union above democratic rights.”
