In the second CAPV Child Education course 200 classrooms have been closed in ten years
  • Linked to the drop in birth rate, Nagore Iturrioz, from Steillas, has given the data and warned that over the next ten years the birth rate will be reduced by more than 20%. This makes the closing of classrooms "unacceptable, among other things because it affects the most vulnerable centers".

As the number of students decreases, “the Department of Education decides who to close the source,” but adds that the fact that more children are born does not have to mean the destruction of jobs, “because additional personal resources are needed in a lot of fields (Basque, special needs…). Jobs don’t go far enough.”

He said these words in Euskadi Irratia, where they interviewed representatives of the unions Steilas, LAB and ELA for the new school year. They have also discussed the Education Act that is going to pass this course and have not ruled out strikes against the law.

Start of course, another year?

Moreover, Iturrioz believes that it is a great opportunity to get the course wrong: "The government is about to take the second seat awards, but seeing the number of places that have been offered today and that not many have been offered, we can again foresee that the beginning of the course will be insane. Every year we ask that teachers and other staff be in the centre before the arrival of the students, but it is never achieved, substitutions are not covered in the first few weeks and is usually chaos. Last year was a great disaster, especially in the area of special needs."
